About Sanskriti

Sanskriti is an exciting heritage project which will investigate the themes of migration, impact of the textile industry, and the rites of passage.  This is a new key project for Artsekta.  We have received funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund and The Rayne Foundation to develop a project based on the heritage of the South Asian community and its interaction and experience with that of Northern Ireland.

The most important part of the project will be the development of links with new community groups and volunteers.  The South Asian and local community will be welcomed onboard by the creation of workshops and events which will explore their experiences, memory, heritage and culture.

When completed the project will produce an oral history archive, community research project, publication, education resource and a selection of lectures and public events.  At the end of each year the oral history interviews will be donated to the Ulster Folk and Transport Museum as part of its oral history archive.

Cultural Exchange
Community and cultural impact, business and experiences of 'The Troubles'.

Year 2

Cultural Exchange

During our second year the project will explore the established links which have been built between the South Asian and local community. Projects will further investigate the impact each community has upon each other. For example, had new businesses been established, did those who migrated stay in the country and the impact of The Troubles on all society. The oral history archive will continue in this year, exploring personal experiences relating to everyday life.

Year 3

Cultural Rites

The final year of the project will address the themes of birth, marriage, and death. Key projects will investigate the significance of particular ceremonies: -how baptism and marriage are carried out in both the South Asian and indigenous communities. -What are the symbols associated with these particular ceremonies, what is the significance within the community, first, second and third generation? Projects will explore the significance of these traditions in Northern Ireland and how they might have changed throughout the years.
