    Some of our participants had the pleasure of learning about the sari, its decoration, and design for our Textile Project. We visited Botanic Gardens with our talented volunteer photographer Dalyce Wilson. Participants learned from each other how to wear a sari and some of the history behind the patterns, significance of colours and the different tying methods.

    Call For Objects Do you have objects or photographs you would like to share with us for Sanskriti's final exhibition? We are looking for any objects you may have brought with you from India. We will include them in our final travelling exhibition. They will be on loan from you and will be returned to you at the end of the exhibitions touring timetable.     Textile Project Gets Underway! Sanskriti's textile project has well and truly began. Our artist is inspiring participants to create a unique piece which tells a story about themselves. Everyone is sharing memories of the Indian community in Northern Ireland and being inspired by the beautiful textiles which are handcrafted in there. Today we had the knowledgable Karishma Kusurkar give us a talk on the techniques and traditions of embroidery. Karishma brought along examples of beautiful materials and clothing.

  • Textile Project

    A new textile project will begin during February as part of the Sanskriti project. Community groups and individuals are welcome to join the group. This project will ask participants to tell their story through the creation of a portrait made from Indian and Northern Irish textiles. As a participant you will gain a knowledge of the heritage of the textile trade and culture of India. Bright colours and luxurious fabrics will be the inspiration for your piece. All you need to bring along are memories, photographs and materials that mean something to you (if you like). The final pieces will be part of a travelling exhibition during 2016. This project will take place over 10 weeks and will run in Belfast and other parts of Northern Ireland.   • Community Research Project

    Hard work pays off! Community research project investigates the textile industry, Mackies and Sons and local businesses. Members of our local community groups have been exploring our links to the Indian community. Mackies and Sons was a key businesses which trained workers in Kolkata (formerly Calcutta) to run jute factories. This was a major development for Mackies along with their world sales. Many workers from India came to Belfast to see how Mackies worked and learn new skills.

    An oral history workshop and tour of Conway Mill will take place on the 2nd of October at 10am until 12:30. Through the oral history workshop we will explore the themes of 'trade' through memories of mills, the textile industry and working life. Faciliator Triona White Hamilton will guide participants through their own individual story. As a conclusion a tour of the mill by local historian Rosie Moore will be given to the group.     Are you interested in oral history and having a wee yarn? Dr Michelle Moloney will explain how to carry out an oral history interview. We will practise interview techniques, learn about how to write scripts and get all our questions answered. This is all the training our volunteers will need before we begin to carry out important interview projects within the local community. Its a day not to be missed, book a place as soon as you can- they are limited!     Calling all Interviewees!! We have started our oral history project. Staff and volunteers have been talking to some very interesting members of the community, but we want to hear more. We are keen to talk to individuals and groups who can tell us a little about their experiences of Northern Ireland (from both the Indian and Indigenous communities). Our theme for this year is 'migration and trade'. You could talk about coming to live in Northern Ireland, working here, school, family life etc. All memories are important and its usually the people who tell us 'I have nothing interesting to say' that give us the most important memories.     An exciting research project will be happening from June until July 2014! A selection of local community groups will explore heritage of Mackies and Sons and its links to India. A selection of local community groups will explore heritage of Mackies and Sons and its links to India. Mackies was one of the biggest companies in Northern Ireland. They had a huge number of employees, some of which went to India to set up factories and train workers. These factories mainly processed jute in Calcutta. The group will research textile factories in Northern Ireland and India, examining culture and fabrics along the way.
